The History of DeLorenzo's Dugout !!!

DeLorenzo's Dugout started out small, as an e-mail only newsletter to a select few in January 1997. After a few weeks, I decided to create a members home page on America Online. That first "online" version of DeLorenzo's Dugout launched in February 1997.[Want to see how far we've come? Click Here to see the original DeLorenzo's Dugout site in all it's text-heavy glory!]

While that site was rather text-heavy and slow to download, it still attracted over 500 visitors through December, 1997. We even had modest success with links to the Dugout from the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association, and the Philadelphia Online Deadpool, both of which appreciated the rather quirky nature of what we lovingly refer to as Version 1.0 (or Volume 1 here in the Archives).

February 1998 marked the debut of the DeLorenzo's Dugout Internet site, now known as Version 2.0. Version 2.0 was hosted on the servers of my employer, US Interactive, Inc., in Malvern, PA, and existed as an extension to their URL. During the life of Version 2.0, we added some nice touches like a LinkExchange Fast Counter, a Guest Book, and some banner advertisements through LinkExchange.

In March 1999, DeLorenzo's Dugout finally graduated. Version 3.0 debuted with our own URL, a new host (Bee.Net of Exton, PA), and the debut of our link through the Amazon.com Affiliates program. It's been rewarding to watch this hobby grow (the number of registered members of our mailing list continues to amaze and gratify me, as does the weekly traffic report!).

Here in the ARCHIVE, I have collected the available versions of my sort-of-weekly column. The column, inspired by such diverse newspaper columnists as Walter Winchell, Dick Young, Mike Lupica, Mark Kriegel and (fictional) Max Mencken and J.J. Hunsecker, forms the backbone of the DeLorenzo's Dugout Web site. Each edition has been given a quick summary of the contents of that week's edition, but those summaries barely hint at the outstanding content within each hand-crafted work of art. They are here for posterity, and for you to see how badly I've predicted certain things, but been dead-on in others! -- Jim DeLorenzo, UPDATED 3/17/99
